LERT volunteers must be members of an LCMS congregation.

The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod’s Disaster Response ministry responds to immediate and long-term needs following natural and man-made disasters. LERT stands for Lutheran Early Response Team. Every LERT volunteer who attends a disaster orientation training event is registered in the LCMS Disaster Response database. Attendance at training events certifies that a volunteer is eligible to participate in disaster response events as a LERT volunteer.  The goal of the LERT program is to provide local congregations with the opportunity to sponsor trained and equipped volunteers who will work in a variety of disaster outreach ministries, such as food and water distribution, sheltering, cleanup and debris removal, basic repair and property protection.
