Deaf Ministry

Deaf ministry is a specialized ministry which brings the gospel to the deaf in their own language, American Sign Language (ASL), and in their cultural context. Deaf people need a place where they can see the gospel of Jesus Christ without any language or cultural barriers. They love being able to participate in the full life of the congregation – worship, studies, talking with the pastor and other members, and volunteering – all without needing an interpreter.

Word of God Lutheran Church for the Deaf has been serving the deaf in Iowa District East for more than 45 years. Based in Cedar Rapids, there are also satellite stations in Davenport, Waterloo, Dubuque, Muscatine, Charles City and Burlington. A couple locations meet weekly for worship, while the rest meet monthly.

The deaf community is one of the most unreached groups in America with only 3% to 5% of the deaf attending church. The need for Christ is great! Our mission is to share the Good News in ASL with all the deaf in Eastern Iowa and beyond.

Rev. Tim Eckert serves as pastor of Word of God.
